Description

Literally translating as ‘The Big Red That Stains’ – this wine does exactly what it says on the label. So watch out!

Alicante is a grape rarity – peel back the red skin and it is one of the few that has red flesh.

Created by crossing Petit Bouchete and Grenache (and known in Spain as Garnacha Tintorera) the grape was historically used to add colour and depth to simple table wines it is now used for top-end wines that are prized for their weight, dense colour and phenolic content.

The vines, planted on clay-limestone soil and exposed in a magnificent setting, were harvested at good maturity and reveal a rich aromatic intensity. For vinification the winemaker has chosen to carry out a hot pre-fermentation maceration, (destemmed and crushed grapes are heated up to 75°C during its 15 hours) to extract the deepest colour and increase aromas.

Tasting Notes: The wine is an inky colour. An initial array of aromas jump out from pepper, very ripe black fruits, thyme, fennel and toasted pine nuts. The palate is surprisingly smooth – not to heavy – with mature tannins and a great intensity of sweet cherry fruit on the palate. Dark chocolate, mocha and nuances of spices tickle the senses. Surprisingly luscious, quirky and very enjoyable.

Food pairing suggestions: will go wonderfully with red meats, grilled beef ribs, Mediterranean tapas and cheese platters. It also pairs with pasta, smoked meat and dark chocolate.
